Sony’s released a new miniature PlayStation 5 trailer dedicated to the console’s Game Boost feature, which is a marketing buzzword for the way in which backwards compatibility enhances select PlayStation 4 games. Obviously, we’ve seen the likes of Days Gone and Ghost of Tsushima transformed with post-release patches – and it’s cool, it’s just overshadowed by Microsoft’s superior efforts.
This trailer, then, has captured a lot of attention online. Many have pointed to the inclusion of Shadow of the Colossus in the footage, which is a release that hasn’t specifically been patched to run better on PS5 yet – although, like all games, it uses the next-gen console’s hardware to smooth out any issues that were present on PS4 Pro.
There’s also a Game Boost logo at the very end of the trailer, which we’ve never seen before. This is what it looks like:
We must admit, the branding is curious, so perhaps Sony does plan to make a bigger push around this moving forwards. As for the trailer itself, though – it’s just an extended clip from that awesome Play Like Never Before commercial the manufacturer released a couple of weeks ago. It’s been breaking out all of the features into individual trailers for a few days now.
Personally, we’d love to see more key PS4 titles improved on PS5, as releases like Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End and Bloodborne are still brilliant and could really benefit from the new hardware. Sony seems more focused on new titles, though, and while the backwards compatibility on its next-gen console is still very good, we’re probably just going to have to accept that it’s never going to be quite at the same level as the competition.

I thought it was pointing to the nearest service station
Features and Services really are the buzzwords these days.
I have a Series X, PS5 and a Switch.
The Series X is an incredible machine. Backwards compatibility and enhancements are all cool, but I'm still spending most of my time on PS5, with some time spent on the Switch at the weekends when my gf is over.
The systems have a nice balance. I don't see any of them overshadowing each other really.
XBOX has the features but no killer next gen exclusives. Exclusives are on the way.
PS5 has the exclusives but it's lacking some features. Features are on the way. (Hopefully not the same features that are on XBOX. I have an XBOX for those. Mix it up. Do something different.)
I'm chuffed with both systems.
All's well.
@AdamNovice lol!
I do think it would be nice if they patched a few more of the key first-party titles from the PS4's library. Like the article says, the PS5's backwards compatibility is still actually very good — it's just been overshadowed a bit.
If they had a shortlist of like 50 games and updated them all, I think people would be really happy with that and it seems reasonable.
Logo looks like something from WipeOut. Sony, bring the series back please!
On topic, another run of Uncharted 4 is long overdue, so id love for Sony to patch in this feature.
Very phallic vibes emanating from this logo
Horizon’s due a 4K 60FPS patch!
Looks like a logo from WipEout.
New WipEout confirmed?!
@ShogunRok If they tweaked the arrow to look more like a ship from Wipeout, that would be such a sweet throwback.
Hopefully Sony has some more features planned for this.
@get2sammyb Yeah something like that would go over well. 👌
@badbob001 Petition time!
@2cents not just eyebrows being raised eh.
If a game is boosted then great, but I'd rather a dev focus on virtually anything else. I love Bloodborne, but the game is 6 years old. I think it's unreasonable to expect an update.
There are a finite amount of devs, and spending time on a game everyone has already played seems like a poor use of resources. Microsoft can focus on this because they aren't making much original content.
Pretty nice. On a personal level i am completely satisfied with 60 fps, so it really does not bother me too much that PS5 BC cannot do more on frame rate for older titles. Save 120fps or better for the newer titles.
I Think Sony Should Create a Team Made For Just This Reason.
The way Microsoft does backwards compatibility is sweet, but I'm happy as long as the game works in general. I'd rather instead Sony focus on getting PS3 backwards compatibility just working than making PS4 games play a bit better personally.
I'll remain skeptical that they'd winging it.
Nice touch with calling them out against Microsoft, Sammy. Nothing wrong with trying to draw attention to weak points.
Sega did this marketing schtick a long time ago with Blast Processing.
I wonder if they've figured out a way to get 60FPS out of games that have it, but we're locked at 30FPS for performance. I'm probably dreaming, but having it unlock frame rate for AC Unity, The Last Guardian, etc. all with post-releases patches that locked the FPS would be incredible. Keep the bug fixes without losing the framerate.
It'd be nice if they made a note concentrated effort on challenging MS on BC. With well over 100 games on the backlog, and higher prices on new ones, I'm playing xb almost exclusively with games I already own.....a few on the backlog for ps as well, but some I'm holding out for hopeful boost patches.
Sotc is a really weird inclusion here. I did play it again on ps5 months ago and it's still the same unfortunate 30fps.
Tlou2 needs this bad!!
@munstre sotc already runs 60fps. You are thinking of the last guardian.
From the creators of WipeOut.
I guess someone still remembers The Designers Republic studio over at Sony.
Nice article. I like how it highlights the effort but also shows the room for improvement.
It's obviously a pitchfork/trident, representing Internet rage. Duh.
@Rob_230 Ngl when people mentioned Wipeout, I thought they meant the TV show and I was questioning so much in my mind why people liked that where they wanted a game of it... And then I looked it up and realized it was something else entirely lol.
horrizon , last of us 2 patches please
@KippDynamite Microsoft can also focus on this cause their console designers and engineers did the work to make sure it something easy to do at the system level, so developers aren't spending a lot of time upgrade games.
That's a bit of a dick move from Sony marketing
I so wish Sony had a dedicated team for this like with Microsoft. But I guess Xbox have the money to do that and the third party devs are happy because they don't have to raise a finger. Sony are relying on the devs.
I do find it funny how the goalposts keep moving. First it was “Sony, please make PS5 back compat”, then “Sony, please allow PS4 games to run better on PS5”, now it’s “Sony, please ensure to work on software to let all games have a significant boost”
I understand, obviously, it’s because old games are what MS have focused on, and everyone wants everything, but Sony must be rather annoyed all their efforts keep getting rendered null and void in the court of social media.
Personally, I’ve been largely playing PS4 games on PS5, and am glad that load times have been greatly reduced. But, if Sony hadn’t made PS5 backwards compatible, and put extra work or resources into the hardware somehow, I wouldn’t have minded. My PS4 is still plugged in right next to it 🤷♂️
@get2sammyb Speaking of Uncharted 4, there's a Bloodborne style mod that achieves 60fps (downscaling the res to 540p, but PS5 won't need to do that) so it's clearly doable in the engine.

Seems a bit odd to introduce a logo for this when likely it’s main push for it has already finished
@thefourfoldroot maybe they could try leading the charge rather than playing catch up ?
Was looking through the list on Push Square the other day of games which "run but with potentially significant errors",& rather surprised at the number I owned....eg: PS2 classics like Canis Canem Edit & The Warriors,Metal Slug Anthology & even the Aladdin/Lion King compilation. Given the chances of some of these titles ever getting an update its a shame nothing more could be done on a system level. And obviously bring across a greater range of classics like even the ones previously supported on the ps3 store front with ps1/ps2 titles.
@Robinsad
They are, in other ways, which is how we should all want it. VR in the console space, for example, is why I didn’t even consider getting an Xbox again this gen, whereas others care more about old flat games, preservation, and subscriptions with newer games, which is fine too.
Why everyone expects and wants all platform holders to have the same focus is beyond me.
Get ready for your 320fps viewing pleasure.
@thefourfoldroot haha you and me both. 75% of what i have been playing on my PS5 has been PS4 titles - but my PS4 is still plugged in next to it in case i need it (although i admit i only use it for charging my gold headset in rest mode as my PS5 wont for some odd reason, and also for my PSVR. I know the VR would be better on my PS5, but i cant bring my self to move the breakout box and play cable jenga again)
Sony have been doing these short clips for about a week now on there YouTube channel.
@Rob_230
Lol, yes, my VR is still plugged into my PS4 too. Mainly because the PS5 doesn’t allow me to watch 3D movies in the headset, but also due to lingering doubts about cabling and passthrough capability with 4K, hdr, 60fps games...
@The_New_Butler And they seem to have put those resources to good use considering the amazing and varied first party games they've released over the years.
It's new icon that will be placed on back of disc cases. I think it will replace "remote play" (ps vita) icon, or "second screen" icon.
BTW have you ever tried Second screen???
I tried about 5 games with second screen and app just shown "there is no second screen"
I would love to have some kind of automatic game boost for older games. I still think about remastering by emulation Sony patented like 3 years ago. Hope they will do something with that. Being able to play PS3 games would also be a great service
Ever since I got the Switch at launch, I've always felt that Nintendo spends way too much time porting their Wii U games for the Switch instead of creating actual new games. It made sense since not too many users got the Wii U. I hope Sony doesn't spend too much time porting over PS4 games. I'm excited for new games and experiences... a boosted 4 year old game is still a 4 year old game at the core.
At the very least the entire ps+ collection should be 60fps. I hope this is a sign of things to come.I don’t have an Xbox but you can’t argue it’s not an excellent feature. Exclusives are far more important to me but there are a handful of older games I would love to revisit with an FPS boost.
@thefourfoldroot I agree there are certainly areas where Sony leads but that lead isn’t what it used to be so they shouldn’t take some areas for granted. And this is almost advertising well we could make these games better we just don’t. It’s a little odd.
@sawaoyamanaka Isn't it only the unpatched disc version of SotC that runs at 60 fps? Hence surprise at it's inclusion in the advert.
@Robinsad
I see it more as taking some of the “we are where you can play your last gen games” narrative back a little from MS. Sony’s communication is awful, like how so many people think PS Now is only a streaming service so ignore it; many may hear about all the back compat features in the news for MS and presume it’s an Xbox only feature. We who read the gaming press regularly may find that strange, but an occasional message from Sony saying we can do this too (even if those in the know understand it’s not as good as what MS do) is better communication than I actually expect from them.
@munstre Totally agree. This sounds like a supercharged version of the PS4 Pro's Boost mode?
It's all well and good with these ideas but if the PS4 game is frame capped at 30fps, then 30fps is what you're going to get unless the code gets patched to support higher rates. Anything else trying to force higher rates sounds like instability hell (and we all know from all the firmware notes, the PS4 is per formant and stable!)
Microsoft have been banging on about this so I guess SONY to should then + I am not to bothered really. Well saying that I haven't played The Last of Us 2 yet or Death Stranding so a update for those might be cool + my back-log of games doesn't seem to be going down to Still got 4 big PS4 games to play + 2 smaller PS4 games then 2 PS5 games...it's never ending
Always love a good innuendo.
The Last of Us 2
Death Stranding
Horizon Zero Dawn
The Last Guardian
Uncharted 4
and last but by no means least....Bloodborne.
Then I will be happy.
Personally I was surprised Sony didn't make more effort with the Instant Game collection given to PS+ PS5 owners, with upgrades to each game, especially the Sony published ones.
@Robinsad The only thing i care about is the thing they lead at games that are diverse, high quality, complete, minimum MT, without liveservice and i love it. I own a lot of older games and its great but in the end i rarely play any of them.
What do i want do i want Sony to spend funds on BC or do i want new games on the new platform difficult difficult.
No just joking it really isnt i love playing new games. With every new generation i was happy new games and new experiences. The updated remakes made them money and gave me a real new experience and looks to match it.
The Rachet and Clank, Shadow of the Colossus remake or keep playing acient looking and playing games i know my preference.
Hzd and alien isolation boosts please
@The_New_Butler If you still believe performance was the issue with the Xbox One you are from a different planet.
PS1, PS2, PS4, Wii, Switch not the most powerfull but highly succesfull platform you know why? Yes its the games and innovation.
Nothing fanboy about that.
@The_New_Butler Wait wait they didnt build anything they bought studio's.
This logo is awfully bad, tbh.
@PossibLeigh no, the game always ran at 60fps in performance mode. The last guardian runs at 60fps with the unpatched disc.
Is up to game developers to patch the game, not Sony. What Sony can do is to follow Microsoft's lead in allowing for FPS boost in compatible games, that requires no patching. I'm strongly against doing fake HDR though, because it is guaranteed to break original artistic vision.
Uncharted 4 should be doable since the engine already functions at 60fps in the multiplayer. I imagine CPU limitations stopped it being run at 1080p60 on the Pro so surely now they can get this going on the PS5, even if they have to cut the resolution back.
@sawaoyamanaka Ah yep, my mistake! Thanks for the correction.
I'm playing Atelier Ryza on my PS5 and weirdly it knew it was being played on a PS5. Normally when playing PS4 games on a PS5, it'll still say stuff like "do not turn off your PS4 when the game is saving" because it wasn't programmed to detect if it was on a PS4 or PS5. Ryza does seem to have been, though, which is quite surprising.

I won’t acknowledge Game Boost as a feature until Sony releases a 4K60 patch for Bloodborne lol.
@The_New_Butler Yup. It takes several decades to make a good game, apparently, hence MS putting those resources to good use all these years.
The argument that the next xb will do better than the next ps console because MS has more money than Sony has been used to death and been proven wrong generation after generation. But sure. Let's wait a few more. Maybe this one, or the next one, but definitely the one after that.
I just see it as ad like this:
PS5: it's the PS4 Pro, only Proier. 🤷♂️
Give it a year or so and no one will even be talking about this. It will be all next gen games. Sony know this so they are not gonna put much effort it.
@KippDynamite
"Microsoft can focus on this because they aren't making much original content"
is this what you tell yourself at night?
@The_New_Butler first you say Xbox acquires studios and releases games, then you say they have no original content. Hypocrisy?
You do see how many games they have in the pipeline right?
@The_New_Butler You’re in a battle you can’t win here. Too many people are brainwashed into hating MS. It’s like Republicans vs. Democrats at this point. 😂
@The_New_Butler A studio they worked with more then a decade or two? You pick that one as a thing to compare it with. 🤪 👍
@The_New_Butler
Which bombed hard and they went their seperate ways.
Bloodborne with 60fps patch would be great.
@KippDynamite i TOTALLY agree with you, i think some gamers are stuck on nostalgia, and the time when they enjoyed gaming.. So they want throwbacks, not saying new gamers aren't experiencing these games for the first times, but sometimes we all seem like hamsters running on the circular wheel. Once I do EVERYTHING in a game, im not going back, unless there is new content, levels etc. Imagine when you get to your 50's and you are like "oh that UNCHARTED 4 was such a game, i want to play it again for the 8th time!" They may put one in an Alzhiemers unit at that point....
I think it would be doing gamers justice to work on new titles, new IPs or provide new content that expands a game's storyline. Anything less is just trying to appease gamers and their "times of youth" fix.....
@The_New_Butler Oh, man. Fantastic attitude. Keep it up.
@FatalBubbles Only not really. The problem is his terrible reading comprehension.
He argued that "The truth is MS have more resources and had the foresight to build the possibility into their new console."
I explained that having more resources means nothing, because MS has had more money than Sony since the first xbox and that didn't make much of a difference. Just like people thought Apple or Google can destroy Sony, Ninty and MS because they have more resources.
If he were to raise a good point, we'd be happy to accept it. But he didn't. He went on the defensive and made a fool out of himself acting all offended and playing the victim.
@naruball From my experience here, the Berlin Wall separates MS/PS fans and trying to cross that will you all kinds of lovely replies.
BC is a feature that really counts at the start of a generation, It means less as the generation continues and the native library grow. But a simple way for PS to boost BC would be to release Bloodborne 60/4k. I know I'd be happy at that point.
@FatalBubbles That's true. I've noticed it, too. But I've also noticed many level headed individuals who have no problem giving credit where it's due. I've never owned an xbox but I've always admired Fable and was even tempted to buy a Kinect. Gamepass also sounds like a good deal and tons of people have said so here.
Sometimes we only pay attention to the loudest ones, while there are plenty who are much more open minded.
@nessisonett Just play it on PC! 😉
